Zebra Stripe Cake

Create a zebra stripe cake with a simple techhique that will make you look like a genius! Using this technique will allow you to create many different looks when slicing your cake.

The technique is simple and easy! After you have your batter mixed and your cake pan ready, you simply take some of the batter (about two cups or so) and tint it the color you would like it to be.

Then, you take about three tablespoons (doesn't have to be exact) and place that into the center of the cake pan. Give it a minute to spread out. Take about three tablespoons of your alternate color and put that into the center of the cake batter that is already in your cake pan. Keep alternating the colors until your cake batter is at the desired level in the cake pan.

Don't tap the cake pan or shake it, otherwise you will disrupt the stripes. Bake the cake in the oven until a cake tester comes out clean. Baking time will depend on the type of cake batter you use.

I did this with two box mixes, one white and one chocolate, and it came out mostly just marbled. Then, I did it with the recipe provided below and it turned out great!

Zebra Cake Recipe

*4 Large eggs

*1 cup sugar

Beat the eggs and sugar until creamy, dissolving the sugar.

Add into the egg/sugar mixture:

*1 cup of milk

*1 cup of oil

*1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (get the real, not imitation kind)

1/8 teaspoon of almond extract

Mix completely, then mix the following in a separate bowl:

*2 cups all-purpose flour

*1 tablespoon baking powder

*1/4 teaspoon of salt

Add this dry mixture a tablespoon at a time to the liquid mixture. Blend thoroughly.

Take about 2 cups of the batter and put into a small mixing bowl and add to the 2 cups of batter

*2 1/2 tablespoons of Dutch processed cocoa, mix thoroughly.


Now you should have two bowls of batter- one chocolate and one vanilla. You should have your pan prepared. Now just start alternating the batters, 3 tablespoons at a time until the pan is as full as you would like it. Bake it for about 40 minutes or so in a 350 degree oven.

Let it cool for about 15 minutes after baking before you remove it from the pan. Be sure to loosen the cake from the sides of the pan by running a knife around the edge before inverting the pan.

You can ice it any way you want after it is cooled. Serve it to friends and family and get ready for the compliments! You now have a zebra stripe cake!
