Make Your Own Wedding Cake

If you want to make your own wedding cake, you have to think about a few things. After you look at my list and think about the categories, decide if you are still interested in making your own wedding cake. I do not want to discourage you, but rather help you make an informed decision about it. If you decide to continue and make your own wedding cake, this site will help you to do that.

On the other hand, if you decide that you are not up to making your own wedding cake, this is still a valuable site that can show how to make any type of cake you want to make a special and tasty cake.

Why: The first thing I want you to think about is why you are interested in making your own cake for such an important celebration. Is it because you want to save some money? Do you want to add your own personal touch to your wedding? Are you an experienced cake decorator for other types of cakes?

Skills: Do you have the skills required to make your own wedding cake the way you want to make it? Do you have the time and inclination to learn the skills you need to learn in order to make this happen? Where and how will you learn the skills? Have you ever made a buttercream rose or worked with fondant? How about making a level cake? You don’t want a crooked wedding cake! (unless you are making a topsy turvy one!)

Time: Do you have the time to bake and decorate your cake? Do you have the time to practice your skills on a smaller cake? Baking a wedding cake is like making many cakes and then putting them together to make one big cake.

Cost: If you are going to do this to save money, add up how much it is going to actually cost and see if the savings are worth the time you will invest. A lot of this depends on how big of a guest list you are planning. Many wedding cakes prices are around $2 to $15 a slice depending on how elaborate the decorations, the type of frosting, and the type of flavors incorporated into the cake. After you figure out your costs, call around to local bakeries with your ideas in mind, and ask how much they would charge. You may be surprised when you find out the answers!

Equipment: Do you have the stand mixer, the cake pans, the decorating bags, the tips, the base for the cake to sit upon, the columns, the separator plates, and the divider sets? Can you borrow or rent those items from someone? If not, you will need to purchase them, which will add to the cost of making your own wedding cake.

Refrigerator and freezer space: Do you have the space to keep the cake and frosting ingredients refrigerated or frozen until you are ready to assemble the wedding cake? Can you use the church kitchen for this? (If you are getting married in a church, this may be an option. You may be able to use a church kitchen even if you aren’t getting married in that church. It is worthwhile to check into.)

How many people are you planning to serve at your wedding? : This number is important to keep in mind during your planning of the cake. Will the cake be the only dessert served? If so, you may need to cut larger slices of the cake. Plan to have some extra slices, just in case. A sheet cake can be a nice back up in case more people show up than you had planned on.

Talent: I touched on this earlier, but before you decide to just “wing it” and make your own wedding cake, see if you have someone with a bit of cake decorating experience that may be willing to assist you when you need it through the various stages of cake making. They may have some suggestions that could be very helpful. They may even offer to personally help you through this project and alleviate some of the stress.

I hope this list doesn’t scare you, because if you make your own wedding cake, it will be something that you will always remember and will add your own unique touch to your celebration. If you determine that you are willing to put in the time and effort to create your cake your way, you will be rewarded with a satisfaction that no “ordered” cake can ever give you. Who knows, this may be the beginning of a wonderful hobby or career for you. Whatever you decide, your wedding day should be a day filled with joy and happiness! You can make that happen!
